OEM GM AC System Parts
The factory air system that came with your GM vehicle keeps you cozy in all manners of weather conditions. How it cools, heats, and ventilates your passenger space isn't all that complicated, to be honest.
How Your HVAC System Works
The air conditioning system features four major parts. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant and converts it to a hot gas. The condenser cools that gas to turn it into a liquid. That liquid flows through an expansion valve and turns into a gas again, but at low pressure. Lastly, the evaporator cools the gas down rapidly with a fan. The chilled air is sent through your vents into the cabin to cool things down. Heating is even more simple. Hot coolant is drawn into a heater core from the engine. A front-mount fan blows air over the core's fins, sending warm air into the cabin.
Signs of AC System Problems
In time, though, your system can begin to struggle when it comes to keeping you comfortable. Here are some signs to look for:
- A steamy cabin atmosphere
- The syrupy smell of coolant
- Inability to cool properly
The first thing you want to check is your cabin air filter to ensure that you don't just need to change it. If that's fine, check the hoses and other parts of your AC system for failure. If you find that something does need replacing, make sure that you use the best part for the job. That would be one made by GM, since it's designed to fit your model.
